A Meaningful Meeting with Commissioner Rodney Ellis
A Meaningful Meeting with Commissioner Rodney Ellis
I recently had the honor of meeting with Harris County Commissioner Rodney Ellis, and the experience truly exceeded every expectation. From the moment we sat down, it was clear that Commissioner Ellis is a genuinely kind-hearted, thoughtful, and welcoming leader. Although our meeting lasted only about 20–25 minutes, the conversation felt unhurried, engaging, and sincere. He was fully present, open, and deeply interested in the topics we discussed, which made the experience especially meaningful.
During our time together, we talked about the power of public art and the important role murals play in shaping community identity. We discussed how murals visible throughout the community—even from spaces near his office—can serve as more than decoration. They tell stories, spark conversation, celebrate diversity, and reflect the values of Houston and Harris County. These conversations reinforced my belief that public art can bring people together across different backgrounds, abilities, and lived experiences.
One of the most exciting parts of our discussion focused on a mural project that is very close to my heart: Empowered Wings. This disability-focused mural, currently taking shape in Houston, is scheduled to be unveiled in early 2025. The mural honors Michael Martinez, a true Houston hero. Michael, a young man with cerebral palsy, saved his family from carbon monoxide poisoning during the devastating 2021 Texas freeze. His courage, awareness, and quick thinking turned what could have been a tragedy into a powerful story of resilience and hope.
Empowered Wings is about more than honoring one individual—it represents visibility, empowerment, and challenging outdated narratives around disability. It sends a strong message that heroism comes in many forms and that disability does not limit strength, bravery, or impact. Commissioner Ellis’s genuine interest and enthusiasm for this project highlighted the importance of having leaders who value inclusive storytelling and representation in our communities.
This meeting was also deeply significant because it connected directly to the resolution recognizing Adam Farris Day. The resolution acknowledges my work as an autism and disability advocate, inspirational speaker, and founder of Younique Abilities, along with my mission to promote inclusion, kindness, and the belief that every person has “unique abilities.” Discussing my advocacy, community involvement, and future collaborative opportunities within the context of this resolution made the moment even more powerful. It was a meaningful recognition not only of my personal journey, but of the broader movement toward acceptance, empowerment, and opportunity for individuals with disabilities across Harris County.
I am incredibly grateful to the Harris County Precinct One staff who helped make this meeting possible. Their support, professionalism, and belief in the importance of this conversation did not go unnoticed. Opportunities like this are made possible by people who care deeply about community collaboration and meaningful progress.
I left this meeting feeling inspired, thankful, and motivated for what lies ahead. Conversations like these remind me why I continue to advocate, create, and share stories that uplift and empower others. I’m grateful for the support surrounding the Adam Farris Day resolution and excited about the continued work to build a more inclusive and compassionate community.
